Formed in 1999 by the late community activist, Bill Borman, the Club is officially recognized by the Nassau County Democratic Committee.  We are a group of dedicated individuals working within the Democratic Party to insure that the voice of our community – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender individuals – is heard.

In the few short years of our existence, we have had significant impact.  We joined with the Empire State Pride Agenda in forming the Nassau Coalition for Human Rights.  In 2001, the hard work of many resulted in the introduction and passage of the bill to amend the Nassau County Human Rights law to include a prohibition against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.  Securing the rights and benefits that occur with domestic partnership has been a prime goal of our group and where we have focused much of our attention.  We are on the verge of finally catching up with many areas across the nation, including New York City.

In addition to educating both the elected and the electorate, the Gay Dems club endorses and supports candidates for office.  Our determination of whom to support is based on an examination of the candidates’ voting records, interviews, etc., and an expectation that they will take positions reflective of the principles of the Democratic Party and in furtherance of our interests.

Financial support is always needed.  While our operating costs are minimal – we have no paid staff and rely entirely on volunteers – we do contribute money to the campaigns of the candidates we endorse.  These funds come from modest membership dues and fundraising activities.

The club meets at Democratic Headquarters in Carle Place.  Attendance is not required, but new people and new ideas are essential to our effectiveness.  New ideas can also be suggested via e-mail at  NassauGayDems@aol.com.  Get involved – make a difference – be part of the change our community needs.  A stronghold of one-party politics in Nassau County has been broken.  This is not the end, but the beginning.

Join us as we continue to advance the principles of the Democratic Party with all its constituents full and equal participants.
